Sunday Setlist - Sept. 13th, 2015
Welcome to this week’s edition of the Sunday Setlist! One of the songs we will be singing this week is the hymn, Jesus Paid it All. Penned by Elvina M. Hall in the mid 1800’s, it is a beautiful story of God using the weak things in the world to shame the strong (1 Cor. 1:27-29).
Elvina wasn’t a professional musician or a vocational theologian—she was a faithful member of her church in Baltimore and faithfully served in the choir and had a love for the Word. One Sunday morning, while listening to the sermon from the choir loft, she was stirred to write the poignant lyrics in the back of her hymnal, the only piece of paper she had.
Unbeknownst to her, John Grape—coal merchant, church organist, and faithful lay servant—had composed a tune entitled All to Him I Owe earlier that week. The two came together, and the rest was history.1
Through two faithful servants, God has given His church a powerful, beautiful hymn to sing throughout many generations. This is personally one of my favorite hymns. It absolutely stands on its own, but I particularly enjoy this arrangement with the added chorus by Kristian Stanfill.
Here are this week’s songs–I hope they are a blessing to you!
Cannons - Phil Wickham
You Are God Alone - Billy & Cindy Foote
Jesus Thank You - Pat Sczebel
How Deep the Father’s Love for Us - Stuart Townend
Jesus Paid it All - Elvina M. Hall & John Grape
I’ve also included both an iTunes/Apple Music playlist and a Spotify playlist, where you can listen to and/or download the songs. Also, I would love to hear your story of how these songs encourage you. Please share in the comments below. Blessings!
