To provide a restatement of the Law by Moses after the wilderness wanderings to a new generation of Israelites which had not been present at its initial reception at Mount Sinai, in order to remind them of the promises made to them, their responsibilities as God’s special people, and the consequences of obedience and disobedience, as well as to prepare them to enter the Promised Land under the leadership of Joshua.
